ON Friday, 29th July, 2011 the Women’s Federation for World Peace Scotland held the first cooking class to teach some recipes from the recently published recipe book. It was a very sunny afternoon and 11 women from 7 different countries (Japan, Malawi, Pakistan, France, Germany, England and Scotland) met in Bridge of Earn, a beautiful village in the Scottish countryside. The recipe book and this cookery class was funded by ‘Awards for All’.

group_at_a_tablecooking02We decided to try 4 recipes from different parts of the world, so on the menu were Miso Soup and Sushi from Japan, African Stew with Talapia, Sima and Spring Greens from Malawi, Vegetable Pakora from Pakistan and last but certainly not least a rich chocolate cake from Britain.

Whilst each dish was prepared, the participants took the opportunity to ask the chef many questions i.e. about the ingredients – where they can be bought – or when the meal was usually served – lunch or dinner or on special occasions. With many experienced cooks present, the discussion became quickly very lively.

Even though the recipes in our cooking book are simple and easy to follow, it was very helpful to get those important tips during the demonstration on what not to do and what to be aware of – especially when everyone tried to roll the Sushi, help and assistance was definitely required. After each dish was ready, we took great pleasure in tasting the new creation and commented on texture and presentation.

The highlight for all participants was (after the cleaning up had been done) to sit around the big kitchen table and enjoy the ‘heavenly’ chocolate cake with a cup of tea or coffee. We all agreed that we would have to repeat this kind of get together sooner rather than later and discussed our activities which are planned for the rest of this year.
